I really don't know a lot about [Boston Whaler boats.] You all really seem to know your stuff. I just bought [a 1971 Boston Whaler SOURPUSS 13]. The boat has been stored outside for some years so the wood is pretty bad. I plan on replacing [the wood]. The original seat cushions are shot; where can I find [replacement cushions]? How was the original wire rope and pulley steering system set up? It all seems to be there but doesn't seem quite right. I noticed this model has cables running down both sides of the boat unlike the side console models. There are pulleys mounted to the motor too and I read that those aren't supposed to be there. Any help would be appreciated. |

The wood used on Boston Whaler boats was generally of very good quality. Even weathered wood can often be restored with sanding and refinishing. If the original wooden components are too weathered to be restored, you can use them as patterns to make new components. Boston Whaler does not offer a replacement cushion set for your boat. Try these vendors: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/OEM.html#upholstery Some details of the wire rope and pulley steering are shown in the owner's manual for your boat. See: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/manual9-17/operations. html#steeringSystem The use of pulleys on the motor is clearly shown. The unreferenced source who told you that pulleys were not used on the motor in a Boston Whaler boat was probably mistaken and probably gave you bad information. |

You have come to the right place. There is a ton of information covering all your questions including Whaler wood refinishing and restoration, cushions and canvas and rigging pulley steering. My 13 has pulley steering and for now I'm not going to install a Teleflex system. There are plenty of reference docs and drawings on this site and other sources on the web that shows how to rewind a cable/pulley system. I would get a cup of coffee or cocktail and dig through the reference section. You should be able to find plenty of advice on marine finishing techniques and materials posted by experienced craftsmen and boaters. I have posted info as well as several other very capable Continuous Wave members. RIch from Florida (RTM, Binkie) understands small boat racing and uses cable/pulley steering. Good luck, Jim is correct that weathered Whaler wood can be easily restored using proper marine grade materials and application methods. I would caution you to carefully inspect your pulley system for cracks, frayed cable, condition of all clamps and connectors. Replacement parts are easily sourced and not expensive. |
