[The author says that he is] going to re-power a [1978] Montauk in the next few weeks, [he has] stripped everything off the console, [and he is] going to re-wire all electronics including switches. I plan on a fish finder, GPS, compass, and VHF radio. I also will have two [Evinrude ICON Pro] gauges. [The author seeks] photos of the layout [of a console for a 1978 Boston Whaler MONTAUK] so I can see how it looks. Thanks--Gary |

Gary--here's my Photobucket account link to some images. You might have to go to page 2. Ignore the off color plugs. They were sprayed over. Also, note the ongoing thread pertaining to other members mounting thoughts of GPS receivers, and radios. One thought is to cut out a large area of the dash, and adding a "lip" by either epoxying wood strips along the undersides of the new hole, say 1/2" exposed. My console was, FWIR, 3/4"(?) thick. Insert a like sized piece of Starboard (they come in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1" thicknesses and you might find a very close match. The thought is when the inevitable times comes to replace or update those devices, it's easy to replace and re-drill the Starboard. Regards - Don |

Here was my 1977 when I owned it. Pretty simple. http://s775.photobucket.com/user/masbama/media/2007-08106.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2 |

Your 1978 Montauk is the same as my 1979 Montauk, except for the larger Whaler decal on the sides. The consoles are identical. My configuration is factory original and includes the factory optional instrument/switch cluster, which inludes tach, speedometer, volt and engine temp guages. This starboard side panel is slightly larger than the standard panel. I replaced the original worn teak plywood panels with 3/8" solid teak panels, with 45 degree beveled edges. Also see the "previous" and "next" photos. |

Rover: I will send you some pictures per email, I can not figure out how to post the pictures on this site, I built my own console for my 16'7" whaler and try to keep it simple. I do not have any electronics, radio under the console and no gauges. You need to get everything you want to put on the console and play with the items until you are happy with the placement. My console is far from factory but I build it for my uses and wants, The only wood I have is a teak block for the controls...Take care |
