1983 Classic 18' Outrage: I am removing the factory installed Pedestal Seats and replacing them with a Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS). Can anyone provide me with the distance from the base of the console to the forward edge of the Z-legs of the RPS? Thanks for your help! Philip (CdnWhalerGuy) |

Rather than look for a stock distance, I'd install the RPS at a distance that's comfortable for you. I put one in my Outrage 22 Cuddy, and I set the distance based on what was comfortable when using it as a leaning post with the seat back forward. I also raised mine with some custom teak blocks, and modification I recommend. The stock seat is too low to pilot the boat from while sitting. Raising the seat also allows a 72 qt. Igloo to fit underneath. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v408/andygere/Whaler%20details/riser. jpg |

I'm sorry I did not see this earlier today. I was crawling around my Outrage 18 with std RPS all afternoon! I should be able to get this for you Tuesday evening, if no one else chimes in sooner. I'm not far from you...in Kelowna! cheers, Mark |

Sorry for the multiple post...wireless connection grief! I just measured this distance on my 1985 Outrage 18, which has an original RPS and console. The dimension between the aft side of the fibreglass console, and the leading edge of the RPS mounting base, measured along the floor, is 18 1/2". cheers Mark |

Thanks all. The 18.5" meassurement was a good place to start; I actually moved the base back to 20.5". As well, I "lifted" the Z-legs about 3". I am pleased with the change-over ... Thanks again!! Phil |

Thanks Andy - My RPS on 95 Outrage 17 is way too low. I've been thinking about this mod for a while. Not sure where I can source teak blocks. Would mahogany work?? I have some salvaged "Whaler" wood I could lam into blocks and seal with boat builder's epoxy. What about that?? |

PeteBBB, When raising my console and RPS I made my wooden blocks out of a 5/4" x 6" deck board. I ripped the board down to width and cut the ripped pieces to length, then laminated three pieces together to raise the console by 3" and four pieces together to raise the RPS by 4". Ipe is a tropical hardwood that is extremely dense and very rot resistant, subsequently making it a choice for high end outdoor decks. It weathers to gray, like teak, or can be varnished. It was less expensive than teak and much more available in my area. regards---knothead |

I have been raising Whaler center consoles (4" or 6") and RPS seats (6") since I first bought my 18 Outrage new in 1986, and always used teak. My local exotic wood shop carries teak boards 1", 5/4", 6/4", 8/4", 10/4" and 12/4". Last having done this in 2004 for a Ribside 21, I recently did it in a Montauk, and the teak, cut to size, and much to my surprise, this time cost me almost $500! I didn't want to take a chance with varnished mahogany. |

There are plenty of on-line teak vendors, but I bought mine at a local specialty lumber yard. It's expensive, but $500 seems like a lot of money, even for a 6" lift (mine are 4"). It is hard on saw blades, so having the yard do any mill work is a good idea. I was able to find teak boards in the correct width, and had it cut to the lengths I needed. Mine are sealed with epoxy on the bottom, and oiled above. |

PeteB88, the previous owner of my 1991 Outrage 17 did a really nice job when he made a 3" riser/cooler dock out of FRP. |

Sorry, it's 3.5" and made of square FRP tubing. |

Andy - Clarification - the cost was for both the console and the seat. The console needs a longer length. Saumon - very nice job on those risers - they look great. I should also note that Mike at Nautical Lumber has ready made 3" risers available for sale. They are cut in the shape of the leg footprint. Two could be laminated together for a 6" rise. |
