Hi, I have a 1987 17' Montauk and want to install a way of getting the wife and kids back on board after water skiing or swimming. Can anyone recommend the best quality item to buy (shipping will cost me $100 or more, so a few extra $ on the hardware will not make much difference overall) Thanks Frank |

Buy the platform made by Raymond Martin - he advertises on Ebay. Very high quality. I recommend the undermount ladder so that platform deck is not cluttered when stowed. My kids have a blast with the one he made for our 15. |

FYI.....I forget what the cut off model year was for the Montauk, but some earlier year model Montauks did not have wood in the side area of the transom to support a swim platford/ladder. My 1982 Montauk did not have the wood to support one, Pat |

Pat, given how the Martin Marine Design unit mounts, whether the boat has wood reinforcements attached does not really matter (at least in my opinion and experience). Half of the structure (the inboard side) is through-bolted on the main engine mounting area, which is very strong. The other half (the outward side) can through-bolt the top mount, with the bottom likely requiring a lag. I've had mine on our 15 (which has no wood reinforcement for the outward side) for probably 7-8 years. In talking with Raymond Martin, he has not heard of anyone having difficulties with the hull being too weak, and he sells a lot of these. Having wood reinforcement may well matter on some swim platform setups, but my experience is that it does not matter on these (which would be another good reason to use this type). |

I Never cared for the look of a swim platform on a 17' hull. I mucks up the clean aesthetics. I installed a dive ladder on my 17 Newport and LOVED it. Here are some images. Mounting Block Backing Plate Ladder Installed Ladder stowed |

Jeff, man that install is sharp. Never saw your pics of that setup before. Sounds like top quality is the goal, but in case time is of the essence, thought it wouldn't hurt to mention my ladder project which was around $50 and about 30 minutes to re-drill some holes for the standoffs to hit the hull. Hope everyone is doing well! |

Thanks Dave, Also here is the setup we had on our Montauk. Many of the platforms I make and sell are installed as a safety device. Nobody plans to fall in the water, but if you happen to find yourself unexpectedly in the water, those over the gunwale ladders and even the dive ladder, will be no help to you stowed away inside the boat. My ladder is always there and requires minimal effort to use, which is important if you find your self in cold water as hypothermia can set in very quickly. Also, I think my plaform is beautiful and looks great on the Montauk transom. There is so much stainless on a typical Montauk hull, my platform only adds to the beauty of the boat. Each grab bar is hand polished to a mirror finish. The bending process dulls the bends of the tubing a bit and we spend a good amount of time, polishing everything out to the point you can see your reflection in the bends. As Russell pointed out, the platform is through bolted at the top and will easily support passengers over 300 lbs. When in use, the bottom pads are being driven into the transom and do not need wood backing in the hull. I do hope you find a good solution for your family and appreciate you considering my product. Ray, do you make two versions of your platform/ladder? russellbailey mentioned above an "...undermount ladder so that platform deck is not cluttered when stowed." I didn't see that that option was offered at your ebay listing. I hesitate to ask, but has any one tried out the inexpensive DOYLE MARINE QuickStep Boarding Steps offered by West Marine? I like the idea of a swim ladder when you need it, but stowed away otherwise, I like it's apparent simplicity, and I like the price (knowing you get what you pay for). Perhaps it's hard to use or cheaply made. |

I fabricated a set up like Raymond Marine, on both my 15' and 22'. The one on the 15' has been in use for 6 years with my 225# self. I have not had any problems. It is still as solid as the day it was installed. I use a collapsing three step ladder, a great help to boarding the boat from deep water, after swimming & snorkeling. Plus no clutter inside the boat. |

Raymond. This is a nicely designed and quality built platform, and certainly worth my consideration for an early Nauset. Like you, I consider it a safety item. Having been stuck in the water without a ladder, I place my feet on the cavitation plate above the prop and push the tilt button on the side. It raises one up to a point where getting back into the boat is possible. Not too dainty, nor as easy as a platform. So, do you have one to fit a Nauset? |
