Last year I purchased a 1987 Outrage 18 that has an old coat of blue bottom paint. At the end of last summer I scrubbed and cleaned the old bottom paint. I plan to add bottom paint in the spring. Can I use any kind of bottom paint? Or, do I need to figure out what [brand of anti-fouling paint] is on the boat currently [and reappply that same brand of anti-fouling paint]? Thanks--Stephen |

Given the high cost of anti-fouling bottom paint I would be cautious. I faced a similar dilemma a couple of years ago. After doing a little research I found that vinyl bottom paint is compatible with most other paints as a covering paint. I also found that a water-based ablative paint would work with most other types. In the end I decided to remove virtually all the old bottom paint and then used the water-based ablative paint. My decision was made easier having a 13 Sport. The paint was quite thick and the boat had several coats that took a while to remove using a hand held electric finishing sander. If you decide to remove the paint do not repeat a serious mistake I made. I did the job on my back lawn having disregarded the fact that anti-fouling bottom paints invariable contain a strong herbicide. I have a dead area in my back lawn that reminds me of my stupidity every day. Not even weeds grow there. Butch |

I had the same outcome as reported by Butch when I removed some anti-fouling paint from the transom of one of my boats. It makes great lawn and weed killer. You should read the owner's manual advice on bottom paint. See: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/manual18-25/maintenance. html#bottom |

Yes, if you want to paint over the existing bottom paint, you probably should ask the previous owner what he used and then find something compatible. I am very happy with Interlux VC17 as bottom paint. I did have to remove all the old bottom paint down to the gel coat but it was well worth it. The great thing about this bottom paint is you just need to power-wash and then reapply a new coat each year. It goes on extremely thin, almost like a stain. It is so easy to maintain and re-apply. If you go this route, just make sure you wear the correct high-quality dust mask or respirator when removing the old bottom paint. |
