Looking at a Whaler with an old Pate Plastics fiberglass tank still in use. Are they a definite no-no? Anyone have any experience with [using Pate Plastics fiberglass fuel tanks]? I personally would prefer to replace the Pate Plastics fuel tank with some other tank. Does anyone have any suggestions and recommendations for a good replacement tank that would fit under the mahogany aft seat and storage compartment of a Super Sport 17?

The best indicator of the usability of a Pate Plastics fiberglass fuel tank with present day blended ethanol-gasoline fuels is probably found from Pate Plastics themselves: they ceased manufacture of their fiberglass fuel tanks and have withdrawn them from the market.
The only present day manufacturers of fiberglass fuel tanks seem to be in the small plane aviation industry, but for aviation there are strict regulations prohibiting use of ethanol fuel. So there is no ethanol problem in aviation gasoline.
I don't think the utility of a Pate Plastic fuel tank is so great that it is worth taking a risk with one.
As far as I know, there is no specialty fuel tank designed just for Boston Whaler with a special height limit to fit under a SUPER SPORT 17 seats or storage compartment. Molded on-deck fuel tanks are available from Moeller. Also see:

I am sure there are Pate tanks still in use. However, I am restoring an older 15 SS that had a Pate tank and asked the same question. After weighing all options I ditched the Pate and replaced it with a 15 gal Moeller tank that fits under the seat. I did raise the seat 3 inches for a more comfortable ride. Tossing a good tank was hard to do but it eliminates a potential problem.

If you want something that will last your life time, and you will never have to worry about a fuel tank again. Go out and have a custom alum fuel tank built to your specs, build it out of .125 thickness

Many thanks to you all for the comments and information. I will ditch the Pate and go for a Moeller or possibly have an aluminum one fabricated if I buy this boat.
