Author Topic:   1979 Revenge 22 Plastic Fuel Tank Pickup

[The URL below is for] a few picturess of the pickup tube from the below-deck plastic fuel tank of my 1979 Revenge 22. I am in the process of going over the fuel system and am trying to get all of the bad fuel out of the tank. My first attempt at siphoning though the existing fuel lines went extremely slowly, so I decided to take a look at the fuel pickup tube to see if there was any constrictions or blockages. The tube looked good, but I must admit it was a bit surprising, as I expected a metal pickup tube with a screen on it. It is simply some sort of rubber tube that is somewhat flexible and slides down into the bottom of the tank. The whole assembly is bolted down to the tank by attaching to a metal plate on the inside of the tank. The gasket is in bad shape, and needs to be replaced.
To anyone in the know:
--what material can I use to fabricate or buy a new gasket.
--the old gasket was covered in a white silicon like material, sort of like Permatex. Do I need this? I assume Permatex would not bond to plastic or rubber.

You should not need any sealer on the gasket. Sealer have the potential of seeping into the fuel and causing blockages.
Perhaps closeup pictures of your installation can reveal more on how it was originally installed, if that is the original install.

I think the rubber pickup would do a better job of getting all the fuel from the bottom of the tank. Great if you have clean fuel but bad if debris is on the bottom.

After looking over the other pictures on your shutterfly site, I am of the opinion that you should remove the cover and replace all fuel lines as well as the tank. This will also give you an opportunity to thoroughly clean the tank cavity and everything else in the vicinity.

If your deck is similar to picture below, than it might not be easy to replace the fuel tank, but if that is what you will consider, than I think a good option.
