I've owned a 1984 Outrage 25 since 2010. The prior owner used it on Lake Erie where he kept it in the water during the summer. When he bought it, he put a barrier coat as well as an ablative black paint on the boat. Since I've had it, I've been letting the black paint wear off, as I don't like how the paint wears off on a swimmer who grazes it and I'm not crazy about the black. I mainly trailer the boat - it might sit in the water a month a year, and the longest time yet is two weeks. It is used in salt and fresh water.
I've read Tom W Clark's excellent writeup on pigmenting Petit Vivid paint to match the hull color, and that is what I plan to do for the paint. However, I'm not sure how much prep I need to do of the old surface. From what I can tell, the prior barrier coat appears to be in good condition. When I put a through hull transducer in a couple of years ago, I could easily sand the ablative paint off to get just to the barrier coat where I drilled the hole.
Currently, I am thinking I'll pay someone to soda blast off the old bottom paint (though I'm considering just sanding what is left off myself - there is not a ton left on the boat). So, here are my questions.
1. Is there any reason to remove the old barrier coat? (I think not).
2. Should I put additional coats of barrier coat on? I suspect yes and lean towards the Petit Protect after roughing up the existing barrier coat for the new coat to get a good bond.

[PS - I have a set of boat stands to replace the blocks stabilizing the front of the boat - I just did not have them when I took the photos]

Prior to Tom doing his Montauk, I redid the bottom paint on my 22 Outrage back in desert tan. However, I started with an already painted hull. For mine, I removed the bottom paint back to the barrier coat but did not remove the barrier coat. I left it as the base layer and it worked out just fine.

If you want desert tan paint, you can buy it straight from the company that I had color scan and match my boat. They should still have the formula and file under my name.
