I just re-powered my 1963 Boston Whaler 13-footer with a used 1995 Evinrude 40-HP two-cycle outboard engine with automatic oil-gasoline mixing, model E4OEEOD. [I checked] everything and gave it a quick tune up of spark plugs, and I changed the gear case lubricant, before my first start in the driveway. The engine started in the driveway and ran for about 10 minutes, with water pumping great. Everything sounded and ran great. There was no horn except when first turn key on for short second.

[Today I took the boat to the lake] for a first test run. When I turned key to ON, the horn starts a steady BEEEEEP. I started [the] engine. [The engine] runs perfectly. [But the aural alert horn is] still [making a] steady beep.

I pumped the [oil hose primer] ball and checked for any leaks. I took off the oil hose and pumped [the primer] ball; oil came out easily and steadily. Again, I turned the key and ran he engine--still steady BEEP.

I turned off [the engine and] unplugged [the electrical] wires to the oil tank, the TAN-with-BLACK wire connector on starter side of engine. The BEEEEP stops.

The 1995 Evinrude 40-HP outboard engine will start and runs great, and yet, when [I] plug in [the] wire to oil tank [there is a] steady non-stop BEEP.

I ran [the boat] around the lake at 25-MPH for about 15 minutes, and [the engine] still runs great. And yet as long as the wire is plugged in to the oil tank the horn is steady BEEP.

Help? What should I test? Please help me make sense of this.. [There is] no obvious no over heating since [the aural alarm] beeps steady before I even start [the engine]. And the engine ran well with no signs of overheating at all. I thought no oil or low oil is a BEEP-BEEP-BEEP, not a steady BEEEEEP. The oil tank is 3/4-FULL.

To interpret the meaning of the aural alert from an Evinrude engine, consult the owner's manual. The owner's manual of an Evinrude engine will provide guidance on how to interpret the meaning of the aural alert signal. The interpretation is usually based on the cadence of the aural alert BEEP, and the circumstances in which it occurs. I have reproduced some information from Evinrude about the aural alert sounds and their interpretation at

In any alarm system, when an alarm sounds, there are three possible situations:

--the alarm system is working normally, and there is an alarm condition;

--the alarm system is not working normally, there is no alarm condition, and a false alarm has been triggered by an alarm sensor which is malfunctioning; or,

--the alarm system is not working normally, there is no alarm condition, there are no false alarm signals from sensors, but the alarm sounder itself has malfunctioned and it is creating a false alarm.

Your situation appears, from your narrative, to be the second case. The sensor in the oil reservoir tank is creating a false alarm.

Thanks for info. The engine did not cone with owners manusl...I'll check oil sending unit alarm sensor.

Typically in those pre-1996 Evinrude engines the aural alarm is triggered by several sensors that are just in a WIRED-OR arrangement, that is, any sensor can cause the alarm to sound by just pulling the alarm signal lead to ground. The different cadences are developed by the sensors themselves.

The oil reservoir tank float level sensor makes its own cadence of BEEP------BEEP--------BEEEP, that is, a series of short staccato beep sounds, right in the sensor. If that sensor has failed and is just shorted to ground, it will make the alarm to sound continually.

As a result, there must be some sort of circuitry in the sensor that makes that intermittent beeping. I don't know the details.

Use the great Evinrude part website

[The] problem [is] fixed. [The 1995 Evinrude 40-HP now] runs perfectly, [and there is] no beeping. [The cause of the problem was found to be the] sending unit in oil tank; [it was] was acting up. [I] replaced [the] complete tank and [float switch] unit with [a] used one (for $50 from Ernie Ryan Outboards in Gardena, Californai, USA, which has a selection of good used part and is a wealth of information on older outboards). Thanks for your help. Happy Thanksgiving--Dug

Thank you for the follow up information on the remedy to the problem. The remedy was exactly what I suspected based on your diagnostic tests described in your narrative. Finding a replacement oil reservoir tank with all the various components in good working order for only $50 was a bargain. And, since you still have the original tank, you now have spare parts for about 90-percent of the tank assembly.
