I just got a perfect restored 13 super sport. This is a boat my Dad was working on before he passed away. He also had purchased a new 50-HP Mercury outboard motor. Is that too much engine? Is it legal? What is maxium horsepower Whaler recommends? Thanks and I look forward to posting some photos once we put on the finishing touches. |

Sounds like a great rig. Whaler recomends 40hp max for the 13 footer, but its not illegal, its just more fun. I have a 13 with a 40 2 stroke Merc, and have seen many with 50`s and even an old Merc Mark 70 inline six. Remember if you ain`t skeered your not going fast enough. Have fun. |

hey binkie how does that 40 merc push your 13. I just bought a 1998 40 merc for the 13 i'm restorin. I wanted a 50 but i just couldn't pass up the deal on this motor. |

bdreaper I think 40 hp is the right motor for a 13 footer. Mine will do 38mph with 2 people, and I haven`t fooled with the set up. If a 50hp was about the same weight I would expect it to ride about the same, but about 3 to 5 miles faster. Years ago I had a 13'BW with a 25 hp, and it ran about 32MPH. If I feel the need for speed, I run my Class F 14' Desilva racing runabout with an 85hp Chrysler racing outboard. It runs about 80, but its a whole different deal, I need to wear a jacket and helmet, and have a chase boat with me in case I break down or worse. |

I had a 1985 13 Supersport. I took off the original 40hp Johnson.I put an new 2003 40 hp Mercury 3cylinder ,electric start, trim and tilt. This boat was very strong and fast. The trim and tilt was essential for controlling optimal speed. Anyone looking to repower a 13 whaler should consider this engine ( not the 2 cylinder ) the 3 cylinder 40 hp Mercury. I have since upgraded to a 22 Guardian with twin outboards. Kind regards, Doug Giff |

The 40 i bought is a 3 cyclinder which seems kind of big for a 40 but i have heard they are good motors. What is the difference in the 2 and 3 cyclinder models besides more weight in the three cyclinder? Is there any advantage in having the extra cyclinder at the same hp? |

I just finished restoring a 1965 13 footer and re-powered with a 4 stroke Johnson 50 Hp. Lot's of pictures and stuff here: http://boston.gotdns.com/whaler/ Planes in just a couple of seconds, and is whisper quiet. I think it's just too heavy though (240 lbs.). I'll probably be replacing it with something lighter in the future. I wish someone made a 150lb 40HP 4-stroke. http://boston.gotdns.com/whaler/Photos/Photo_Motor7.htm >Doug Raleigh, NC |

Brings back memories of when I was a kid. A friend of a friend had a classic 13 with a 50 HP (4 cylinder) Merc. Sweetest running engine I've ever heard (or not heard). It was super smooth and super quiet. Wish Merc still made it. It would be a perfect match for my 2000 130 Sport. By the way - the boat was really fast and probably the most fun of any boat I've ever seen. Chick |

The maximum horsepower ratings for the SUPER SPORT 13 can be found in the Reference Section article on the 13-foot hull. See: A good discussion and summary of the question of powering boats above their rated maximum horsepower, see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) section of the Reference section: |

Thanks for all the great info. Sounds like I need to check with my insurance company before I have this new 50HP Merc. installed and if they greenlight me, it sounds like this little Whaler could be a blast. Again, thanks as always for the great advise. I'll look forward to posting photos in the next few weeks. Just need to get the new wood back on and have the Merc installed. |
