I am considering repowering my 1989 OUTRAGE 22 WD with a single 225-HP Mercury OptiMax. I currently run two 1989 130-HP Yamaha outboard motors. The OptiMax has a 25-inch shaft. I believe, from what I've seen on other postings, this shaft length is ok.

Has anyone a similar setup that can give any information on performance?I'm interested in increasing range, as well as cruise speed.

In 2003 I repowered my 1990 Revenge 22 W/T with a 2003 25" 225 Optimax. My boat does not have Whaler Drive. The engine replaced a 1989 225 carbed Johnson. I counted on the Johnson for 2.0 nautical miles per gallon. On a trip this past summer to Glacier Bay National Park (138 miles round trip), I used 46 gal of fuel = 3.0 nautical mile per gallon at 29 knots and 3900 RPM (fully loaded boat with 30 gal extra fuel, 15 gal water, camping gear, food, and 2 people). So a 50% increase in mpg and range.

At 3700-3750 RPM the Opti gets about 3.2 nmpg.

The old carbed Johnson cruised at 4000 at 24+ knots. I usually cruise at 3750 RPM and 29.3 kntos.

Top speed with a 19" Mirage Plus prop is 43 knots at 5200-5250 RPM.

Since the 20-25 WD's are designed for 25" twins, to me it seems like a single should be 30". But when the 87-92 WD's were on the market, 30" engines were not available, so all 25" singles installed were a compromise in my opinion.

JimH may have some opinions on this subject, as he has been wrestling with this subject for some time now. See his Evinrude prop reports on the WD subject.

The Revenge 22 Whaler Drive takes a 25" single *if* it has the modified Whaler Drive, i.e. it has the flat spot on the bottom of it.

Linus Toy (linust) has a Revenge 22 Whaler Drive that he repowered with a 225 Optimax. He should have some good feedback for you.

Read this:

If your Whaler Drive has the flat-bottom center section, a 25-inch shaft single engine should work well. Mount it as low as possible (that is, in the top hole). This will place your anti-ventilation plate about 1.5-inches above the flat bottom of the Whaler Drive, and this is the equivalent of a "two holes up" mounting (or the third hole) on most Boston Whaler notched transoms.

I have found that this combination gives good performance, but you must use a performance type propeller which can work with this mounting height. Use a stainless steel propeller which has good cupping.

You should be able to use my results as a benchmark, but I would expect you will get more speed because:

--your Outrage 22 WD is lighter than my Revenge 22 WT WD

--a new 225-HP OptiMax is probably more powerful than my 13-year-old OMC V6

I hope you get better fuel economy, too. You should with the OptiMax. I'd say JimP's numbers would be good targets. Again, with an OUTRAGE you ought to do a bit better due to lower weight, but then the Whaler Drive will reclaim most of that weight and add significant hull drag.

Actually, I will be quite interested to see your results myself, so, please, re-power and run some tests!

I would try the MIRAGEPlus 17-inch Pitch or the REVOLUTION4-17 or possibly the 15-inch (if the engine cannot reach the very top end of its rated speed range with the larger pitch).
