This discussion collects reports of testing of Mercury ENERTIA propellers on classic Boston Whaler boats. For general background and prior speculative discussion on ENERTIA propellers, see the now-closed discussion: New Mercury ENERTIA Propeller If you have data from a test with a Mercury ENERTIA propeller, please add it to this dicussion. Some of the replies that follow have been consolidated from other discussions on this same topic. I have made several inquiries asking for data on the results of testing the Mercury ENERTIA propeller on classic Boston Whaler boat hulls. The replies have been consolidated here. |

I took the day off to test my new Enertia 17-inch-pitch propeller on my 18 Ventura with 1998 135 Optimax. It was a warm day today, mid 80's. Water temp was 68 degrees with a slight breeze and chop. I had one passenger, about 20-gallons of fuel, 15-HP two-stroke kicker with 45-lb stainless bracket, dual batteries, bimini top up. I have a Doel-Fin and Bennett sport tabs. Engine is in the second hole up from stock. Performance is being compared to my previous aluminum 17 pitch BlackMax prop. Acceleration seems a bit quicker. Speed in the mid-range is about the same. Top speed is about 4-MPH faster. RPM and Speed (GPS): 3,200 = 21-MPH With the Enertia I can bump the rev limiter. I could not do this with the Aluminum 17. Overall, I am pleased with these numbers. They compare favorably to Whaler's published test on March 1, 2001 with a 17 pitch Mirage. I am 4-MPH faster at top end, and that's with the bimini top up and a kicker motor. |

Have you tried any other stainless props on that rig? |
| sosmerc |
No, I have not had a chance to test against other stainless props, but the Whaler test results that are shown on their website are with a 17 pitch Mirage Plus. |

In my desperate propeller search I took my brother's ENERTIA 17-inch pitch off his 24-foot Grady-White boat with a OptiMax 225-HP to try on my 1985 Boston Whaler 18-foot boat with a 150-HP Evinrude 1993. The results of the ENERTIA were OK, that's it. Engine speed at wide-open throttle was 5,600-RPM and boat speed was 37-KN. At 3,400-RPM boat speed was 22-KN. Both of these speed were slightly less (by 1- to 2-KN) than my current aluminum no-name-brand 19-inch pitch propeller, and I was still porpoising. But I will tell you on my brother's boat he went to the ENERTIA from a MIRAGEplus in the same pitch and picked up 3-KN at both WOT and cruise. His gallons-per-hour went down slightly. |

Are you only interested in results from classic Boston Whalers? Don't you think owners of post-classic Boston Whalers would benifit from test results of Enertia props as well on newer Whalers? |

[Re why I prefer reports of results of testing the ENERTIA propeller on classic Boston Whaler boat hulls] I am familiar with the classic hulls and their performance, and, as a great plus since I do not have an encyclodepic memory (anymore), there are not that many of them. So a report about the performance of the propeller on one of those hulls will be more meaningful to me (because I own or have owned three classic hulls) than a report on the performance of the propeller on one of the newer hulls (of which there are many designs, each model seems to have its own unique hulls design, and with which I have absolutely no familiarity other than a few momentary test rides with a boat load of passengers at a boat show or Boston Whaler owner's event). However, any test results are welcome. |

Without wishing to hijack this thread, I would have thought it would be interesting to hear about any Boston Whaler hull type from which there is some definitive Enertia data. It appears the ENERTIA propellers are very difficult to come by. I have actually ordered a pair of 21's but cannot get to try them until Christmas whence I will post a report. [The author is believed to be in the United Kingdom. According one well-informed Mercury correspondent, the ENERTIA propellers have been available for sale in the United State since May 22, 2006, although it appears that delivery may not have been immediate.--jimh.] |

[Reprises his test resutls.] I have a 17 pitch Enertia on my 1998 Ventura. I can confirm that the prop has increased my top end performance by a full 4-MPH over the Black Max Aluminum 17 I was running before. "Hole shot" and mid-range improvement were not as dramatic as top end. The prop is noticeably lighter than other Mercury stainless props and the finish is awesome, like a mirror. The one inch pitch increments make it really nice for dialing in these newer motors that have rev-limiters. In most cases you want to select a propeller so that your engine can just barely bump the rev-limiter with your normal load. My engine is a noisy 1998 135 OptiMax. :) |

I have tried a couple of Enertia propellers on my 1999 21-foot Outrage and they are fantastic propellers. Very responsive, robust "hole shot", strong top end. However, the cruising speed is not at strong as my MIRAGEplus. I think the MIRAGEplus is a great fit for my boat due to the boat's heavy weight. With that said, the MIRAGEplus is still my full time prop. However, the Enertia is a great propeller to use for water skiing/wake boarding due to its fantasitic "hole shot." The Enertia has a ton of rake in the blade. |

In a separate discussion there is test data on ENERTIA propellers from a 32-foot offshore v-hull boat (not a Boston Whaler) with twin Mercury Verado 250-HP motors. See: Mercury ENERTIA Propeller Test Results The executive summary of those results: the ENERTIA was faster than other Mercury-brand stainless steel propellers at wide-open throttle by 2- to 3.5-MPH at speeds around 54-MPH. |

I do not wish to appear to foreclose further discussion of this actual first-hand test data and results of use of the ENERTIA propeller, so if anyone has a comment, feel free to append it. I shall begin: I do appreciate the contribution of the test data, and thanks to sosmerc for his. However, a trial in which the ENERTIA is tested against an aluminum BlackMax propeller is perhaps a straw man argument. I think almost any stainless steel performance propeller would easily outperform an aluminum four-blade. |
| sosmerc |
Just a minor correction...my BlackMax aluminum propeller is a 3 blade 17 pitch and my Enertia was also a 3 blade 17 pitch. I did experience an rpm increase as well as a performance increase just as Merc had stated in their advertising. But in general, one would expect at least a minor improvement by going from an aluminum to a stainless as long as the comparison is of similar pitch and design. In my case, the Enertia delivered as promised and then some at the top end. |

I have just fitted a set of 15-inch Enertia propellers to my Boston Whaler 305 CONQUEST with 250-HP twin Verado's. I do not really understand what the hype is about these new props. They seem no different to the standard 15-inch MIRAGEplus. Anybody else tried the Enertia props? |
| jimh |
As far as I know, all first-hand reports of ENERTIA propeller results are contained in this discussion or in another discussion linked from here. Did you happen to record any data with the new propellers that could be compared to data you recorded with the old propellers? |
