I'm going to buy a Nissan Marine 50 TLDI for my 15-foot Boston Whaler boat. The gear ratio is 1.85:1. It comes stock with a propeller, and the range of pitch available is from 7 to 15-inches. [What is the best propeller for this application?] |

You can answer this yourself by following the following procedure: --total all the weights of the hull, motor, gear, passengers, and fuel for the boat --using the target speed, visit the Propeller Calculator (in the REFERENCE section, link below), and enter your target speed, your gear ratio, and the maximum rated RPM of the engine. For SLIP enter a figure of 10-percent. --the calculator will give you a target pitch Crouch's Calculator, as implemented by CONTINUOUSWAVE at http://continuouswave.com/cgi-bin/crouchcalc.pl Propeller Calculator, as implemented by CONTINUOUSWAVE at http://continuouswave.com/cgi-bin/propcalc.pl If you would rather not perform the procedure yourself, just reply with the following data: --total weight of boat, motor, etc. --maximum engine speed for rated horsepower of motor |

A 50 should be able to push a classic 15 to 36 MPH. Since the redline of that motor is 5850 RPM, the propeller calculator suggest going with a 13 inch pitch so start there. |

Give us all a performance report when you get her "properly" dialed in. I think that's going to be a very neat, well balanced package. |

I agree with Peter's assessment. Since the motor comes with a (presumably aluminum three blade) propeller, select the 13" pitch and try it out. Stiletto makes a nifty three blade stainless steel propeller for the Nissan 50 TLDI called the Triad II. Pitches from 12" to 16" are available in one inch increments. |

What is the gear raio on a 48spl? I ran a 17" on that so I was thinking maybe a 15" since his redline is higher. |

The 48 SPL ran the same gears as the 50 and 40 -- 2.42:1 |

jimh, thanks for all the infromation. I used crouch's formula and came up with a 12.6" pitch. Close to peter's answer. I'll order the 13" pitch prop and start from there. When i get the boat all set up, i'll post all the performance data. thanks guys, your so much help. |

For a near reference, I have a 2005 40 Tohatsu(not TLDI) on my 15 Striper. My dealer recommended a 12 pitch stainless, which gets me 5800 rpm at 32 mph. Dick |

hey gman, i'm not sure what a 15' stripper is . but is it simular to a 15 ' sport 1979 whaler. how does your boat perform w/ a 40 hp. i hope a 50 hp nissan tldi isenough hp for the boat. so i'm a little interested on your results. I will carry 4 adults and gear. hope to hear from you thanks mike. |

Mike, I think 50 hp is enough for a 15'. Is it going to be adequate for your needs? Four adults and gear? You're going to be close to the max weight limit for that hull just in personnel. Mel |

4 adults and gear on a normal basis??? Get a Montauk, honestly. |

Mike, I think Nick hit the nail on the head. Horsepower isn't the question, adequate interior room is. Mel |

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. The 40 is completely adequate with at least 3 people, that's the most we have had in the boat. I had a 60 Johnson(3 cyl) on it before which would run about 35 mph, so losing 20 hp and 100 lbs only cost me 3 mph top end. The loss of 100 lbs on the transom made a difference on the static trim. Bottom end, frankly I haven't noticed a great difference, but now that gas is $3.00 a gallon, the fuel economy is appreciated. I think I get about 7-8 mpg with the 40. It is also a very smooth running motor, no problems in 2 years of service so far. Dick |

what prop would be best on the boat, to pull a skier out on two skis that weighs 145 lbs. I ordered a 13" pitch 11.1" dia. prop for the boat. have not run the boat yet to see how it pops out of the water to plane. so do need a 4 blade, stainless, smaller dia or pitch. Any thoughts on what would work best. or will the 13" prop be ok. consider 480 lbs of personal on the boat. mike |
