I have an old Outrage 19 and [plan] to re-power--not by choice. [The boat] currently has an Evinrude 150hp which pushes it well. I have found a used E-TEC 90-HP for a good deal. Is [an E-TEC 90-HP] powerful enough [for an older OUTRAGE 19]?

Some basic information:

--the 150 got me to speeds around 43-MPH, plenty of get up and go, fast to plane, easy skier towing;

--I don't go offshore except small five to ten-mile jaunts every three years;

--most of my boating is pleasure boating with the kids on a lake.

Will the E-TEC 90-HP do the trick? The minimum [recommended engine] for the boat is 70-HP, from the information in 1977. Dry weight between 1,500 and 1,900-lbs, but never weighed mine. Thanks.

I would look for a used four-stroike-power-cycle engine of about the 115-HP. The Suzuki DF115 works well on my Outrage 18. A Suzuki DF90 is based on the same engine and would probably provide adequate performance. The higher Suzuki gear ratio will use a larger propeller. When I re-powered [the OUTRAGE 18] I would not have considered a 90 or any E-TEC. T

If the older OUTRAGE 19 reached a speed of 43-MPH with a 150-HP engine, a significant loss of top speed will be expected with a reduction to 90-HP. Boat speed is typically proportional to power by an exponential factor. We could estimate with 90-HP that the expected top speed would decrease to 33-MPH.

An engine in the 1970's rated at 70-HP was probably rated at the power head, not the propeller. You could consider that as meaning a modern engine of 65-HP would be the equivalent. With a 90-HP you should have exceeded the minimum power with some margin in reserve.

Use of E-TEC engines to re-power older Boston Whaler boats seems to me, by reading the many examples mentioned in prior discussions, to be quite popular. I attribute the popularity of the E-TEC for re-power of older Boston Whaler boats to be due to the lighter weight of the E-TEC compared to many alternatives. I would not dismiss the possibility of using an E-TEC to re-power an older Boston Whaler boat.The number of instances in which an older Boston Whaler boat has been re-powered with an E-TEC and received extremely positive reports is very significant, and completely overwhelms a single anecdotal opinion to the contrary.

I have an 18 outrage as well. I repowered with a 150 etec. I would ignore the above comments about certain brands. This site has been overwhelmed lately with obnoxious threads degenerating into such arguments.

I think most guys think a 90 would be absolute minimum for an outrage hull. I would like more Hp than that for mine. However, if you truly do what you say with the boat and don't mind having to run her harder (higher rpm)when on plane, I imagine it would work.

With used motor, I would focus more on past maintenance, use pattern, and condition. If you like etec, as I do , then bring it to a etec dealer and have them hook it up to a computer and run diagnostics. It will give you detailed history with any fault codes,a temp history for motor and emm, and rpm chart showing the motor's time at each rpm band.

Good luck

Time for Tom W. Clark to remind folks again of his brother-in-law's early Outrage 21 with a 90 E-TEC.

Beaux - For clarity's sake, the 19' Outrage of the 1970's is a completely different hull than your 18' Outrage.

I have a 1977 21' Outrage hull with twin 80 HP Mercury 4cylinder engines. The boat will run in the low
30's with just one engine.

Thanks everyone, first...
I don't have a motor. or brand loyalty or preference, but at $3500 with 359 hrs and coming from an ETEC dealer it certainly is affordable and has peaked my interest. I would rather have something in the 115-125hp range, but looking around they are pricing them from $9K used to $14K new.
I know some of you guys put a new $14K motor on an old hull, but Im not sure here in S Carolina I can do this and not get completely skunked if I had to or chose to sell anytime soon. I buy and sell boats like a pair of shoes so everythings for sale all the time, and I have owned this boat for 1.5 yrs which is almost a record for me, so I do love the boat, the brand, and the beauty of the wood, so
What was Tom Clarks story with the ETEC, good or bad?

Sounds like you have a good approach on resale and a very good deal on the etec, btw. I have had my whaler for 7 years and plan to keep her even if I get another vessel in the next few years. That is the ONLY reason I chose to repower with new with a new Etec. I chose a 150 as I have some needs to pull tubes,skiers on an infrequent basis as well as the desire to run at low rpm over longer runs when fishing. There is no way I will ever get my investment back in $$$.... I'm planning on getting it back in use/ pleasure. :-) o

In your case, the 90 should push it fine for general use. My hull weighs 1250-1500 from factory. It should be similar to a 70's hull as it was made before the heavier model in early 90. At least, that is based on what you list as the hull weight in your original post, and what Jim lists in the reference section on this site for my hull.

Being at a dealer, have them print an engine report and post it if you have any concerns on any faults or other diagnostic info in report.

With a new Etec, you may just marry that girl and keep her for a while instead of getting "another pair of shoes". Haha

I think your 115Hp engine pricing is way off. If you hop over to TN, you can buy a brand new 115 Optimax for $7500.

But if you are a boat flipper, even that may be too much to put into the boat.

The 90 wil be fine for the boat, about 32 MPH. But because you may be flipping it, with only 90HP on it, it will be a hard sell to most buyers. So be careful, as most want more HP than that. It will also look very small on that wide beam boat.

I would look for a good used 150 2-stroke. They are out there.

[Knows of a] used Mercury 175 EFI for sale for $3950. The compression numbers are a little over the maximum spread, indicating some wear and hard bass boat use, but it will still easily put out 150 solid HP. It could be a good deal for you and pleanty of power. They are extremely quiet running engines.

Tom Clark's brother-in-law put a 90 ETEC on a beautiful early Outrage 21. Tom posted performance information and photo links to the boat so a search on the site should reveal something. In short, the performance was remarkable.

Accounts of the performance of an older 21-foot Boston Whaler boat with a 90-HP E-TEC are given by Tom in
