I have finished the initial phase of documenting the user interface of the Lowrance HDS series multi-function instruments, particularly the HDS-8, and have published my hypertext article

Lowrance HDS User Interface

At this writing the article does a good job of documenting the Settings Menu. As I got into this project, I began to realize that the HDS-8 and its NAVICO operating system (NOS) is really a very complex and rich device, and a truly complete map of all its menus would be more like an atlas.

I have put quite an effort into the article so far, but it has been rewarding: I have learned a great deal about the HDS and its operating system in the process. As a result, I am certain I will be better able to operate it and will get more enjoyment and results from it.

Nice work Jim! On a quick scan through I found a couple neat things that I'll have to look into.

Thanks!

Rob--Thank you for the positive feedback on my hypertext documentation of the Lowrance HDS user interface. I have received several positive comments about the article, and they have provided the stimulus to keep working on it.

I have been expanding the scope of the article, and it is moving toward completion.

Thanks Jim ..... this is a perfect example just how complex these systems are. Most ocassional users will never find much less use some of these features.

When I ride with new users I always tell them the more they use their equipment the better and if they are the ocassional boater then the new learned skills are very much perishable.

A lot of work went into Jim's article.

Tom

[Editor's note: Tom's right--a lot of work. Read about what I did to get one good illustration--jimh

I am continuing to expand my hypertext article on the HDS user interface, and I have just added more details to the section on the Waypoints, Routes, and Trails pages, particularly on the Waypoints tab.

My article on the HDS User Interface has now reached completion of its intended scope. All of the significant menu options are documented, and most of the contextual menu options are also described.

As a result of writing this article I now have a much more thorough understanding of the user interface of the Lowrance HDS and its Navico Operating System (NOS). I hope the article will help readers gain a better understanding, too.
