Broken Drain Tube and Wet Foam

Postby BrentMontauk17 » Thu Mar 30, 2017 11:46 am

Last night I was cleaning out [the unidentified boat's] bllge area and noticed the rubber washer around the brass drain tube was broken. I noticed the drain tube was loose, so pulled lightly and the drain tube pulled straight out--with ease.

It looks like the bottom of the tube was broken off at some point as there was a jagged edge, and it did not have another flared end. The total tube length is about 9-inches-long. The hole in the transom had some wet wood, but it did not feel rotted at all. Through the hole in the the blge, I was able to feel wet foam and pulled some gunk out. The transom is solid--no movement.

What's next? I assume I let it dry out and install a new drain tube. I will most likely go with PVC as I do not see a benefit with brass tubing, other than [keepng the boat original]. I am going to try to find a local weigh station to see how much water got through.

Thank you in advance.

There are three practical options.

Brass - reinstall oem brass tubes with gaskets
Marileon - Two piece drain tube kit
PVC - epoxy thin wall Schedule 40

Bronze/Nut style - Don't work due to angle of transom

Classic owners have opinions pro and con for each.

There are many threads on each type if you search the OLD forum.

These topica are well-covered in the FAQ. See

Boston Whaler boats are double bottom boats, and they have no bilge area. Your images show the aft cockpit sump

Please tell us what boat are you asking about.
