Please identify the component shown in the illustrations below that is part of c.1985 Johnson 90-HP outboard engine on my 17-footer.

I believe this may be called the pivot tube, the tilt tube, or the steering tube.

The interesting part is the tube on the left side appears to be sheared flush, but the nut doesn't have any tube inside and looks like it just unscrewed.

Q1: what is the degree of difficulty to replace this unidentified part?

BACKSTORY
After returning from a trip over the weekend, I noticed a large nut sitting inside the motor well. Further inspection showed this had come off the tube that goes thru the mount brackets and the center section of the engine where the motor pivots up with trim-tilt. There are large nuts on either end of the threaded tube.

The part shown in Figures 1 and 2 is called the tilt tube.

The end shown in Figure 2 appears to have been sheared off. That is probably where the loose large nut in the cockpit came from.

Typically the tilt tube can be driven out of its position in the engine mounting bracket. With the amount of rust seen, proceed carefully. Usually application of heat and penetrating oils will help loosen the tilt tube.

Because removal of the tilt tube will cause the engine to fall off the mounting bracket, the usual approach is to have a new tilt tube ready to be immediately driven into place as the old one comes out one side at a time. You should support and stabilize the engine when attempting to remove the tilt tube.

You can find the OEM parts diagrams online at

I located your engine using the specifiers JOHNSON / 1985 / 90 / J90TLCOS / MIDSECTION

The replacement part is number 0335553

Hi Jim,

Thank you for the wealth of information on this tilt tube. I am ordering up the parts and the replacement will hopefully be straightforward. I will try to find out the Diameter of the current tube to I can get a like size pipe to bang out the current.

You had actually helped me a few years back when I raised up this engine 2 holes. I had created a hoist eyelet in the garage ceiling to do this so I will just reuse to take off the weight. I will also look for some videos of the process.

Thanks again.

Depending on the transom layout, there may not be sufficient room to completely drive out the tilt tube while the engine is still bolted to the transom. You should assess that possible problem before beginning the job.

Trip Down Memory Lane

[The linked posts above from the old forum about tilt tube removal] were a trip down memory lane seeing some of the authors' names: Chuck Tribolet, Tom Clark, BigShot and JimH--what a wealth of knowledge shared so often and freely. I hope I can return the favor at some point.
