| Author | Topic: Revenge 22 WT Windshield Rubber Trim Piece |
| home Aside |
My windshield saga and problems continue. I was working on the Revenge yesterday when I realized that the rubber strip piece at the base of the front windshield starboard side, that basically covers and protects the screws that attach the windshield to the top of the cuddy is gone. Probably blew out while trailering. Second incident now. I checked the TaylorMade web site to see if they carry those molding pieces (if you would call it that), don't see anything like that, and based on previous contacts they have a 9 year obsolescence, so I don't think they will be able to help me. Here's my previous post. Any ideas? I mean other than going over the entire windshield system and making sure everything is tightened down and rubber strip moldings are secure/glued down? http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/011668.html |

I contacted a company called Ocean Dynamics, I was referred to them by TaylorMade Products last year when I lost my vent window off the Revenge. According to TaylorMade, Ocean Dynamics specializes in fabrication of obsolete and out of production marine windshields and windows. It appears the Rubber Molding piece I referred to is called a Screw Cover, and after I inspected the same piece on the Port side of my windshield, it is actually more of a hard plastic that is flexible to a certain extent. It is listed as part #V474 on their accessories and hardware page. I called and they asked that I send in the piece off the boat that I still have so they can be sure it's the same item. I'm reluctant to send anything for fear it's not the same item they have and that it will get lost in the shuffle. I think I'm going to try to get some photographs of all angles, measure it, e-mail it to them. There must be some place close by that carries this type stuff. Here's a link Pat |

In my search to find OEM supplier of the screw cover missing off my Revenge windshield I stumbled onto this site and I believe based on my inspection of the screw cover gasket (if you will) that this is the supplier. I believe it is part #30-1080 on their vinyl gasket page. The history of this company states they have been a supplier for windows, hatches, and windshields to many major boat builders, including Boston Whaler, for over 20 years. http://www.aluminum2000.com/about.html Pat |

Correction, that should say "their products have been installed on" not "Supplier of" at any rate I believe they are a source of the screw cover gasket I'm seeking.... Looks like I'm a one man thread here.....not talking to myself gang, just hoping this information may be of help to some other unfortunate Revenge owner....in the mean time Batton your hatches, gaskets, and anything else that might fly off your windshield. Pat, I need the same piece, for both sides, as I have a non-walk thru model, and the windshield leaks at the bottom on the port side. That piece is there, it has shrunk quite a bit and looks quite brittle. A question for you, does Taylor make any of the rubber for the vent windows? Mine is way shot and in need of replacement very badly. |
| home Aside |
The fellow from Aluminum 2000 is sending me some sample cross section cuts so I can determine if any of the three that looked like it in their catalog are the right one....I'll keep you posted. I also tried to get through to Taylor Made today but was unable to. I'm also hoping they may have information on who produced that Screw Cover Molding for them. I did see on the Taylor Made web site a item called Screw Cover Foam, the dimensions seem right, but it appears to be a product that would have adhesive on it and would be stuffed into the opening, instead of the original which is a vinyl molding that snaps in. I also saw a thread by Backlash that he used the Screw Cover Foam as the replacement for the original equipment on his Walkaround 21 (can't remember what year it is), but I haven't that application in person......I'll certainly let you know, As far as the rubber (and it is rubber) that covers the hinge mechanism on the vent window, I have not investigated that, but I plan on pulling mine off and putting a wee bit of adhesive on the back before I loose something else..... We are listening Pat! When you find it post it , mine are "shrunk" a bit and it might be good to replace it now. As for talking to your self, it might be better then talking to my Whaler geeks as my wife says!....Jack |

I contacted TaylorMade about five years ago for windshield trim for a Sea Ray project. As you know, they made BW windshields as well, along with most others. The person I talked to was very helpful, and said I could email photos and dimensions of the molding needed, trace them with a pencil and fax it, or send samples to her. She said that they still (at that time) had many of the older style screw cover moldings and trim, and if the one I needed wasn't available, a good substitute would be. Here is the information I have on file- Taylor Made Systems New York Remember, this info is 5 years old, but maybe it will help. When you find the molding and are installing it, you can make it easier and avoid the "shrink" problem by putting it in a very hot bucket of soapy water. While pushing it in, stop every so often and "pack" it, pushing it back towards the end you started from. When finished, cut the material at least an inch longer than needed, and pack it back again until you get it set in the channel. If you do this, it will never shrink enough to leave a gap at the end. John, Thanks for the information, I was too busy to get a call in to them today, I'll call on Thursday, Have a Great 4th of July...your input is appreciated Pat |

Pat, Not sure if we are talking about the same thing here, but here is a link to the "windshield screw cover foam" that was used on my 1991 21' Walkaround. It measures 5/8" x 1-1/4" and is simply pressed into the channel beneath the windshield. It comes in an 8' roll for $34.99! My original foam had shrunk maybe 1-1/2" at the ends and I believe the "factory" must have stretched it when installing. As John points out above, it should be compressed into the channel as much as possible. I replaced mine several years ago and reused some of the old foam (which was still in good shape) by putting 2 sections of the old stuff in one channel tightly compressed. I occasionally spray the foam with 303 Protectant which keeps it nice and black as well as offering UV protection. Steve |

Hey Steve, Good to hear from you...hope all is well.... the foam screw cover you have is definitely different than what is on my 1985 Revenge 22 WT, but it could be an option if I can't find an exact replacement for mine. I've only seen the foam screw cover in a small photograph in the West Marine catalog. Would it be too much to ask for you to take a closeup photograph of it on your windshield so I can see what the application looks like? Are you going to make the Torch Lake Boston Whaler Rendezvous? thanks for your reply...Regards to Carolyn! Pat |

Pat, You're welcome. I hope those numbers are still good. Could you give me a follow up on whether they are, or if any of the info has changed, either by post here or email? I had a friend use them a couple of years ago and the contact person was still there, and got him the fuzzy "whiskers" trim for a boat window he needed. It'd be great for my files to know if it's still good or not. Thanks, and good luck. John |

John, Boy the things I could get done if I didn't have to work..... The numbers for Robin Gordon are still good, I've got a message in to her and she's suppossed to call me back....I'll keep you posted, thanks again....I still haven't had the opportunity to try the pieces I received from Aluminum 2000 Pat |

Just received a call back from Theresa Havlick of Taylor Marine, same phone number as Robin Gordon, Robin still works there... as John said she requested is e-mail her digital photographs and measurements, etc and she will start searching.....I'll keep you posted when further information is available Pat |
| jandrewg |
Hey Pat, I was excited to see your latest post. Been really busy with work and hadn't checked in here since yesterday morning. Well great, I'm glad that went somewhere. So the new person replaced Ms. Gordon, or they both work in the same department? I'm anxious to see how it works out for you. Can I beg for another update? Thanks, John |

John, Robin is also still working at taylor Marine and can be reached via the same phone number & e-mail.....Hopefully I'll have the photographs & measurments ready for e-mail to her by tomorrow. Just been too busy to get to it as of yet Pat |

Any word on the trim yet Pat? |

I e-mailed her photo's complete with a ruler to show dimensions, still waiting to hear back from her, I'll keep you posted, I'm sure tey're probably closed on weekends, so I'll try calling her on Monday Pat |

I Called Taylor Marine today for two reasons. First, to see if Theresa Havlick, who is an associate of Robin Gordon's, and is assisting me has received my e-mail & photographs and has had any luck locating the screw cover molding. She didn't remember our phone conversation, and didn't have my e-mail. I promptly sent the e-mail & phographs again. Don't get me wrong I'm not bad mouthing Theresa, she was very nice and appoligetic, I'm sure she must get a lot of calls from people who are looking for parts and describing them completely wrong. Second to tell her that today while surfing the Taylor Marine I found another page I hadn't seen there before (I have no idea how I missed it). It clearly shows a couple of screw covers that are of the configuration I need, Part #8338950 and #8338920, of course this depends on their dimesions. So Theresa is going to send me cross cut samples of each to see which one might possibly work. here's a link http://www.taylormarine.com/hardware/weldedglazingparts.html Also today, I had the opportunity to see the TACO Screw Cover Foam that I was thinking might be an option, it probably would be OK for a temporary fix on my particular windshield, but probably wouldn't fit very well or last very long Pat |

Hello All, Good news for you Revenge Owners, I received the samples from Theresa Havlick, phone 1-518-773-0636, of TaylorMade Marine. The elusive Screw cover molding for the Revenge TaylorMade Windshield is Part #8338920 on the page I previously Posted. The sample snapped in there nice & tight. I'll be ordering enough to redo the entire windshield unit Disclaimer: My Revenge is a 1985, but I would imagine all the 80's Revenges WT and possibly walkarounds are using the same windshield frame material. Pat, How about putting a group order together for a discount? I know there are a lot of these windshields out there, mine included. |
| Bulldog |
Pat I would be in on a group order, if the savings are a lot, the shipping might be a pain. I'm going to call and get a sample sent to see if it is the same on my 1987 W/T model. Thanks for your effort!...................Jack |

Jack & Tom, I'm going to call Theresa tomorrow and see what the price is and how long of a turn-around for delivery is.(I'd really like to have it for the Torch Lake Boston Whaler Event August 17-19 but beggars can't be choosers). Incidently on my Revenge the pieces for the port & starboard windshield are around 25" long, the side pieces are around 65" long, I was going to order them an inch or so longer so I can have extra length for trimming at installation. Also based on snapping the sample piece I have into the winshield base, it should be noted it is a very stiff hard semi-flexible plastic and should probably be heated a bit prior to installation and prior to removal if you need to get at the screws for tightening I wouldn't be opposed to a group order, and wouldn't mind ram-rodding the order for the group with each person paying what the TaylorMade cost for material is and shipping from me to you. My Revenge 22 WT is a 1985. I'll send you each a digital photograph (via e-mail0 I took of mine so you can compare to yours & see if they look the same, I'd have to imagine they are the same. Pat |

Bulldog & Tom, I took the liberty of ordering enough for all three of us. It is $1.42 a foot and has to be ordered by the foot. So we each will have two 6" pieces for the sides of the windshield and two 3" pieces for the sides of the windshields, this will give you more than you need for trimming etc.. I'll figure out the shipping details when I get it and notify you. Note: I'll be out of town to Isle Royal between 7-3-07 and 7-11-07 hopefully it'll be waiting for me when I get back. Pat |
| home Aside |
That should be two 6' pieces and two 3' pieces, sorry about the typo Pat |
| jandrewg |
Pat, I'm really glad you found the right piece. I know I mentioned this before, but try using almost-hotter-than-you-can-stand water with dish soap in it. The soap helps lubricate the molding and makes it slide better as you pack it in. Another method that works well is to roll up the molding and heat it in the oven (at a very low temp!) or with a heat gun, and lube it with spray silicone, spraying both the molding and the channel you're putting it in. I like soapy water best... It's better to use an anvil type cutter than shears. You can find them at one of the home improvement stores. They have a replaceable top blade and a nylon or plastic bed on the bottom. You'll get a nice clean cut with this type of tool. Again, glad it worked out. It's these little details that make a boat look sharp. John |

John, Thanks again for the lead on Robin and of course for the information re: cutting, Installing, etc....you must be a mind reader, I was just thinking about how to cut it so it would come out with a nice clean cut edge. As I mentioned before the numbers and Robin Gordon's name are still good contact's, Robin is still there at Taylor Marine, she may have been busy because she turned me over to Theresa fore help. Let me just say that I am pleased to see the search for the piece conclude successfully. This is a fine example of what makes this website (thanks JimH) and members so great. Way to go Pat!!! Would love to see photos of the new pieces once installed. Phil |

You're very welcome. Casco Bay is on the right track, it's neat that jimh puts people together on a site like this. Glad he puts up with us. I'll second that request for finished pics if it's not too much trouble. I'm kind of anxious to see if it's the same piece as the one on my old Sea Ray. I'm sure we'll talk again somewhere here...
