I recently purchased a 170 Montauk and am in need of advice on where to mount an Ace Pot Puller. Manually hauling 400 ft of leaded line is getting a bit old and I hear that he Ace Line Hauler is the favorite choice of most. I currently run cannon manual downriggers mounted on the aft-most angled t-section of the railing. I was thinking about just swapping out the downrigger with the pot puller during shrimp/crab season. However, I felt that the railings would not be able to handle the strain of a fully weighted pot and a strong current. I was hoping to get any pictures or descriptions on how everyone mounted a pot puller to their Whaler or Montauk. Thanks in advance for the help!

I would be worried about a rail mount with the pot puller. If you get caught up on bottom with the wind and current going, you are anchored and pulling on it. I do not know how heavy your pots are, but I had this big octopus on top of my heaviest dome pot once. The Ace handled it, but it was heavy. I have also snagged another line and then you are pulling more than just your pot.

Is there a spot where you can get to the gunnel? Maybe removing a section of rail?

There is an spot in the gunnel between the bow and aft rails. However, I think that are might be more important to keep clear for boarding.

Would a rail mount with a board that transfers weight to the gunnel work?

The Scotty rail mount on a tee with the board should work if you are not fishing the 40 pound dome pots. The wire pots that you add weight to should be OK as long as you get the pot off the bottom and are pulling only the pot up.

Don't do it. The 170 Montauk is too small for a pot puller. If a pot gets hung up on the bottom and there is a current, the pot puller will act as a lever arm and pull the boat right over unless you can cut the line.

That's what happened to these guys:

While the newer 170 Montauk is a wider and heavier boat than the classic Montauk, I would still hesitate to mount a pot puller on one.

See John Martin's recent comments about how a pot can get hung up on a puller and what happens if here is a current. His boat is a 22 foot Revenge, a huge boat compared to a Montauk:

I move my pot puller to a 15 Sport and pull crab pots with it when shrimp season is over. Where I got in trouble was I was fishing real tight to a mound and when we started pulling. We were in gear and headed away from the mound and into the wind and waves. I was looking back to check the line angle and to keep it away from the prop and got a little off course. When I could see that we were going to turn around, we should have dumped the pot line then. Instead I tried to help the boat turn all the way around. I should have done it quicker. We did not make the turn before the pot got hung up on the mound. We had also not practiced for the best way to get the line off the pot puller quickly.
